The making process reveals the opposite: each work is the result of several materials, temperatures and kinds of handwork being brought into a precise but deliberately visible relationship.
From Shell to Object
The process begins with a natural shell. Its curvature, edge and surface are not neutral supports; they determine how a new form can be built around them. Clay is shaped by hand to establish the eye and its surrounding structure, responding to the shell rather than forcing every work toward an identical outline.
Firing fixes what was first soft and provisional. The formed element must then return to the shell as part of a more complex assembly. Metal and solder introduce another visual and structural language: seams, extensions and small points of connection can support the object while remaining legible as evidence of construction.
Polishing and finishing bring the materials into balance. They do not erase every irregularity. Natural variation, hand pressure and the marks of joining are part of what allows one shell-eye to differ from the next, even when works share a recognisable design language.
The Process Behind the Gaze

Clay moves from touch to permanence; solder shifts between liquid and solid; a found organic structure becomes the basis for an eye that feels alert. Each stage changes both the material and the character of the work.

That movement found a large audience in 2026. On 8 August, a Shell Oracle making video on Bilibili passed two million views and reached number 25 in the platform-wide ranking. The same process content received approximately 200,000 likes on Instagram.
Those figures record circulation, but they are not the centre of the story. What viewers encountered was the usually hidden labour inside a small object: forming, firing, soldering, polishing and adjusting until a natural shell could hold a gaze of its own.
