A samurai returns from the sea.

Something happened there.

A Leopard Mermaid once attacked him. His wife is somehow bound to that creature, though The Promise never explains the nature of that connection. They may have been enemies, allies, relatives, two forms of the same being — or something that belongs to none of those explanations.

An old man remembers more than he says.

The adults carry the remains of an unfinished past. The children inherit its consequences.

The Promise is built around that absence.

The film does not conceal a single correct explanation waiting to be discovered. Several different histories could lead to the same ending. The wife and the Leopard Mermaid can be understood in more than one way, and the story deliberately refuses to close those possibilities.

What matters is not exactly what happened before.

What matters is what survives it.

A promise passes from one generation to another. Two children are left with something the adults could not resolve, and the ending becomes complete without making the past complete with it.

The story is therefore closed in its consequences but open in both directions: several pasts can lead into it, and several futures can grow from it.

Its silence is part of the narrative.

The Promise / やくそく is an Edo ghost story from the world of Shell Oracle, combining samurai imagery, maritime folklore and dark fantasy in a story about memory, inheritance and the things one generation leaves for the next.
